Privacy Policy

MacroChef is a cooking and nutrition app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what we never do with it.

What we collect

Email address
When you sign in, we ask for your email address to send you a sign-in link. We store it securely and use it only to authenticate your account.

Usage data
We collect anonymous events about how you use the app — for example, when you import a recipe, log a meal, or use the nutrition tracker. This helps us understand which features are working well and which need improvement. Events contain no personal details beyond your user ID.

Anonymous device identifier
If you use MacroChef without signing in, we generate a random identifier and store it locally on your device. This identifier contains no personal information — it is a random string created on first launch and never linked to your name, email, or any other data. We use it solely to count how many people actively use the app. It is not shared with third parties and is permanently deleted from our servers if the device has been inactive for more than 30 days. Uninstalling the app removes the identifier from your device.

Recipe import URLs
When you import a recipe from a website or video link (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.), we process that URL on our servers to extract recipe content. We log these requests to monitor quality and debug failures. We do not store the full content of pages you import indefinitely.

What we do NOT collect

We do not collect your name, phone number, or address.
We do not access your contacts, camera, microphone, or location.
We do not track you across other apps or websites.
We do not use third-party advertising SDKs.

How we use your information

To authenticate your account via email sign-in
To save your recipes, meal plans, and nutrition goals across devices
To improve app features based on anonymous usage patterns
To diagnose and fix errors in recipe import processing

We do not sell your data

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

Third-party services

MacroChef uses the following third-party services to operate:

Supabase — authentication and cloud data storage
Groq and OpenRouter — AI services used to analyze recipe content and generate structured recipe information. Only the information necessary to process your request is shared.
USDA FoodData Central & Open Food Facts — publicly available nutrition data

Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We only share the minimum data necessary for them to function.

International data processing

Some of the third-party services we use operate internationally. As a result, your information may be processed in countries other than your own. Where this occurs, we rely on those services' safeguards to ensure your data is handled with appropriate care and security.

Cookies

MacroChef is a mobile application and does not use browser cookies. We collect anonymous usage events and an anonymous device identifier (described above) to help us understand usage patterns and improve the experience. No personal information is included in these events.

Data retention

Your account data (recipes, meal plans, nutrition goals) is stored as long as your account exists. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us.

Children's privacy

MacroChef is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Your continued use of MacroChef after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
